Katiskaniemi nature trailu
The Katiskaniemi nature trail starts behind Hotel Rauhalahti. The trail is mostly located in a conservation area. The most valuable parts of the Katiskaniemi nature conservation area include nemoral forests rich in deciduous trees and stunning pine forests. The old aspen and grey alder forests by the shore also serve as a habitat for flying squirrels. Biotope management work carried out in the conservation area in the period 1999–2003 included removing spruces from the nemoral forests dominated by deciduous trees and increasing the number of rotten trees using various techniques.
The nature trail is around two kilometres long and passes along the Katiskaniemi cape’s shores. Information on the nemoral forests and their flora and fauna is available along the trail. Visitors also get to learn about the plants and animals living on the shore and in water. Human presence is visible in a lumberjack’s lodge and traditional pasture scenery.
